Bare Essentials are a jazz, swing, rhythm and blues trio of considerable standing in the Dunedin music community. This is their first appearance at the folk club and we are very excited to have them!
John Meddings on guitars and vocals,is a musician whose talent for fine tones and technical ability has made him a sought-after live and session musician, nationally and internationally. He has played with many of the great NZ performers including, Annie Crummer, Sir Howard Morrison, Ray Wolfe, Jacqui Fitzgerald, Suzanne Prentice, Don McGlashan, Barry Saunders, Ray Columbus and more. In the studio John has played on many albums and soundtracks for television. Away from the stage he's well-known as a the go-to instrument repairer for Dunedin musos. John recently retired from guitar tuition both privately and Otago University and now enjoys arranging great compositions for Bare Essentials.
William Davidson, vocals and percussion, worked professionally as the lead singer with the NZ 70s’ pop group “The KalQlated Risk” releasing several singles and an album gaining the finals of the Loxene Golden Disc Awards for two consecutive years. The group was contracted to a major NZ brewery and toured NZ extensively for several years. Through their recording company HMV, the group was introduced to Decca Records UK and moved to London, recording one album and again touring and supporting various artists. Although not performing professionally these days, music is still the big thing. William says, “Bare Essentials to me is a wonderful thing – with little else than an acoustic guitar, maraca and saxophone we endeavour to play precise rhythmical movement, working with dynamics and textures to create joyful music”.
Tony Stephens – saxophone, vocals and percussion. Tony loves to play music and he finds himself playing with two of his all time favourite musos. Tony plays tenor saxophone and percussion and loves to sing. As William (lead vocals) has a voice unmatched locally or nationally,Tony loves to stack those three part harmonies; rounding out this tight, polished trio. "Bare Essentials is to me the ultimate in light and entertaining fun. A group that enjoys creating an experience that a crowd can go home at the end of the night having enjoyed an enriched and fun night of entertainment."
