Phil Garland has spent a lifetime researching, collecting, writing and performing Kiwi songs, during which time he has often been described as A National Living Treasure and New Zealand's foremost and finest heritage balladeer. In recognition of this important work he recently received a QSM for services to New Zealand folk music in the Queen's Birthday Honours List of 2014.
Over the years he has recorded some eighteen albums – winning Folk Album of the Year at the New Zealand Music Awards three times as well as being a shortlisted finalist on three further occasions. No stranger to music awards and international recognition from the likes of Australia, Japan, USA, United Nations, Germany & Switzerland, Phil has performed extensively around the world promoting the Kiwi musical heritage with a blended presentation of songs, ballads, stories and yarns that introduce audiences to the musical heart of New Zealand and its people. Phil’s entertaining performance prompted one American reviewer to say:- “his songs transport you to New Zealand so effectively, you may be inspired to take up residence there!”
As a Kiwi Balladeer and Singing Historian, Phil is constantly in demand throughout New Zealand and Australia. The Southland Times has called him A Country Music Legend, while a review in the Christchurch Press described his songs as Crafted Colonial Storytelling. A Brisbane reviewer had this to say “Phil plays a vintage 12 string guitar in a unique finger picking style, which is probably the best and cleanest style I have ever heard anyone play live on a 12 string guitar, while his songs were like old friends waiting to be heard for the first time.”
In 2007 Phil was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by ROCKONZ, the Christchurch based Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Phil’s major work Faces in the Firelight was published by Steele Roberts in 2009 and looks at the New Zealand story through collected folksong, oral history, yarns, humour and back country verse. The Phil Garland Songbook was published by Kiwi Pacific Records in late 2011 and this is available directly from Phil or from Kiwi Pacific Records firstname.lastname@example.org
Phil has just released a new album Billycan Ballads, which is a musical tribute to the Kiwi balladry of the late Joe Charles and is intended to accompany Joe's posthumous new book of verse Blackberry Pie due for publication in early August..
